Mokauea Island Yale Service Day, as a guest

We explored and maintained the island and surrounding reef, which were once part of an extensive fish pond network. The island is privately owned by a few families who are leasing it from the state. They have 30 years left on a 60-year lease. To get to the island we took outrigger canoes. We did a ho’opuka (chant) before launching and had a group prayer when leaving. The residents cried as we left.
