Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary

Last day of the whale season on Captain Steve’s Whale Watch in the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary .

The first video is the mysterious whale song, sung only by males. One would presume the males sing to attract females, yet sometimes they sing in the absence of other whales. Perhaps they sing for all the reasons we do so.

The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, created by Congress in 1992, protects humpback whales in their Hawaiian home as they mate and give birth before heading to Alaska for the summer to feed. The sanctuary is administered by NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) and Hawaii’s DLNR. The oceanic coast is a treasure to be protected.
